It’s no secret that London is as family-friendly as any other major city in the world. However, where we as a city tend to excel are our options for families looking for something a little bit more unique and memorable.
Of course we’re not denying that activities such as the London Eye and Madame Tussauds are plenty of fun, but here we have for you a list of attractions that might appeal to the more alternative amongst us…
1. Horniman Museum and Gardens, Forest Hill
The benefits of a visit to the weird and wonderful Horniman Museum are seemingly endless: not only is it free to enter but it is also jam-packed full of extraordinary objects, some of which you can actually touch.
2. Trinity Buoy Wharf, Canning Town
If you and your family are a fan of whacky art concepts and performances then Trinity Buoy Wharf is the place for you, housing its very own lighthouse and a hugely impressive shipping container village
3. Hidden London Tours, London Transport Museum
Not one for the faint-hearted, these exclusive tours take visitors on a journey across the London that time forgot. Depending on your chosen tour, you can step inside disused tube stations, London’s first skyscraper and even the ‘Lost Tunnels’ of Euston.
4. Davenports Magic, Charing Cross
Anyone looking for an alternative Harry Potter experience in London would do well to visit Davenports Magic, which is basically the real thing in action. Selling their magical wares since 1898, Davenports is the oldest continuously owned magic shop in the world.
5. Kayak London, Various Locations
Even though it might seem like a daunting prospect, there are several fully-certified companies who can safely guide you and your family around some of the best sights in London via kayak
6. Thames RIB Experience, Various Locations
Thrill-seeking families needn’t look any further than the Thames RIB Experience, which takes its passengers on an adrenalin-fuelled tour of England’s most famous river and all its renowned sights.
7. ‘Chel-Ski’, Fulham
Who would have known there was an indoor ski slope right under our very noses in SW6? We’re sure you’d have a hard time convincing people that you learned to ski in London but what a story to come home with!
8. Lee Valley White Water Rafting, Stratford
Another great option for adrenalin-junkies; imagine being able to ride the same white water rapids used in the 2012 Olympics. Well, at Lee Valley you can make this dream a reality, under the supervision of trained professionals, of course.
9. KidZania, Shepherds Bush
If your kids seem to be showing signs of boredom then why not put them to work? At least that’s the premise behind the fantastical world of Kidzania; an indoor city run by children, where they can try out any career they’ve ever dreamed of.
10. Puttshack, White City
Hailing itself as ‘the most incredible mini gold concept in the world’, the brand-new Puttshack course at White City looks like it will be a winner for any member of the family who’s fascinated by gadgets and technology
